Statement of the International Assembly of Migrants and Refugees (IAMR) on GLOBAL FORUM ON MIGRATION AND DEVELOPMENT

MIGRANTS SAY NO TO THE GLOBAL FORUM ON MIGRATION AND DEVELOPMENT (GFMD)

As representatives of states meet on October 29-30 for the Second Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD), we call on our fellow migrants, migrant advocates and supporters to join the genuine voice of migrants as we say “No to GFMD!”

The GFMD is a device created by First World countries and international financial institutions (IFIs) like the World Bank to corner the remittances, borne by the blood, sweat and tears of migrants, and use it in funding for the “development” of poor countries. It is being used to sell neoliberal anti-poverty financing strategy that relies on the remittances of migrant workers.

The false notion of “migration for development” that the GFMD peddles further promotes the systematic exploitation of cheap labor. It is meant to capture the remittances of migrants to ensure super profits of bank monopolies and ensure that debt-ridden economies have enough reserves to pay off debts, especially amid the raging financial crisis. The GFMD thrives on the poverty of Third World countries and forces them to institutionalize migration policies. Clearly, the agenda and framework of the GFMD reveals that what is in store is greater commodification of migrant labor, and greater exploitation and miseries of migrant workers.

The GFMD holds more significance this year because it is being hosted by the Arroyo regime in the Philippines. The Arroyo regime is the nightmare of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs). No other regime has bled the OFWs dry with enormous exactions from fees to charges to taxes. It has duped OFWs to part with their earnings in collusion with big business, illegal recruiters, traffickers and racketeers, and in utter disregard of the abuses and violations of migrants’ rights. It is currently riding high on the phenomenal increase in dollar remittances even as OFWs continue to reel from the falling value of their dollars.

It is time to expose that the GFMD is a predatory scheme that does not address the root causes of underdevelopment and the massive migration of poor people, much less consider the harsh conditions and legitimate issues of migrant workers. The GFMD does not promote the development of poor countries but pushes them deeper into the quagmire of poverty.

The GFMD is a sham assembly that talks about migrants but deliberately excludes the migrants themselves. It talks about the protection of migrants but in reality violates our rights. First World countries, IFIs, banks, businesses, and governments of poor countries-- which have profited immensely and unscrupulously from our hard labor-- are the same institutions that are behind the GFMD. After years of neglect, abuse and exploitation, it is time that the genuine voice of the migrants be heard: No to GFMD! No to labor export policy! No to forced migration! Create jobs at home! End poverty! Defend and advance our rights! (end)

-----
The International Assembly of Migrants and Refugees (IAMR) is a gathering of migrants of various nationalities around the world who will gather in Manila in October to speak out and oppose the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD). The IAMR is led by the International Migrants Alliance (IMA), the largest alliance of migrants worldwide, with the cooperation and support of Asia Pacific Mission for Migrants, IBON Foundation,
Bayan Philippines, Asia Pacific Forum on Women, Law and Development, and Caram Asia.

Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago and scenes from Senate Hearing (From TV Patrol World)

video

‘At Large, At Leisure’, a book of human interest stories

Twenty new books published by the University of Santo Tomas Publishing House (USTPH), covering a wide range of subjects, from ancient Filipino folk wisdom to geriatric medicine were launched simultaneously last September in time for the International Book Fair at the Mall of Asia’s SMX Convention Center in Pasay City.

One of these is journalist-educator Nestor Cuartero’s first book, ‘At Large, At Leisure.’ The book, with a cover drawing by Michael P. Blanco and book design by Bong Bundang, contains journalistic pieces on the environment, travel, the passing scene, the arts, written in human interest style. Many of the articles first came out in Philippine Panorama, the Sunday magazine of the Manila Bulletin, where the author writes regularly.

‘At Large, At Leisure,’ Cuartero says, is his humble offering to students of journalism and communication, who may find the articles useful in their search for a voice. The author is a faculty member of the Faculty of Arts and Letters of the University of Santo Tomas, where he is also the coordinator of its Journalism Department.

Cuartero has his share of journalism awards, among them the grand prize in Primer Premio de Periodismo given by Instituto Cervantes in 2000, first prize in the La Sallian Scholarum Awards for coverage of youth and education issues in 2007, and a 1977 PATAS Award (Philippine Academy of Television Arts and Sciences) for outstanding writer in a documentary program.

Of the book, here are a few words from the cover blurb.

Jullie Yap Daza, columnist of the Manila Bulletin: ‘As the variety of his subjects in this book proves, Nestor Cuartero dabbles in everything from rain to firetrees, bamboo to yacon, global warming to praying the rosary; and as he moves from history to religion and art, it looks like he’s loving every minute and every multi-facet of it. The book shows where Nestor’s heart lies. The curiousity that drives him, the care with which he stitches his facts and paragraphs together, the simplicity and clarity that shine through.’

Mario A. Hernando, editor of Saturday Malaya: ‘Neatly written, charming little pieces reassure us that the art of the essay isn’t extinct, that there are holdovers from an older, gentler world to keep the flame burning. The pieces in this collection are thoughtful, simple, lyrical, illuminating, as to have come only from a contemplative mind and a caring heart.’

Rina Jimenez David, columnist of Philippine Daily Inquirer: ‘Nestor Cuartero’s collection of features written for Panorama Magazine is as good a ‘textbook’ as one can find. The book ‘teaches’ that there is no subject matter, no event or issue beyond the reach of the well-written feature. Nestor manages to imbue every article---be it on global warming, malunggay noodles or the impact of prayer on one’s longevity---with human interest and immediacy. Every piece provokes curiosity, incites involvement, challenges the intellect.’

UST Publishing House Director Prof. John Jack Wigley says the 20 new books are in line with UST's goal to publish 400 titles before the university's quadricentennial celebration in 2011.

“AT LARGE, AT LEISURE” is available in UST Bookstore and selected National Bookstore branches.

ABS-CBN STATEMENT ON DOJ SEC RAUL GONZALES' STATEMENT

It is our responsibility as journalists to report on people and events that affect public interest. The public has the right to know. Abdullah Macapaar alias Commander Bravo is one of the country's most wanted men, a key figure in the collapse of the peace process in Mindanao. He's a legitimate story, and our interview with him aired Oct. 20 and 21 adhere to ethical standards of journalism.

We at ABS-CBN have been covering Commander Bravo for many years now—even during peacetime. We will continue to report on what he says and does with the same zeal and professionalism that we would use when covering his arrest - if and when that happens.

Ang Sa Wari Ko Supports BLOG ACTION DAY 08 in its war against POVERTY

Spiritual Poverty - Ayon sa World Vision: "It’s something that doesn’t make headlines next to war, disease and lack of clean water, but in many ways it is equally important when it comes to survival. For people all around the world, including Australia, spirituality can be a source of strength when coping during adversity. It can also be a guiding principle for forgiveness and tolerance that can help prevent conflicts ever happening."

(Changes doesn't happen overnight, and it doesn't jump to nation to other nation that easy, but by sharing ito locally to your fellow countrymen, with your own language. It should start from ourselves first to educate ourselves what's good for us and what is our rights and share it to others).

Oil found in Palawan

The offshore Galoc oilfield in the province of Palawan commenced production on Thursday, extracting "light medium crude" from the oilfield at 10:45 a.m., the government said.

"We are expecting to get 20,000 barrels a day in the first 90 days of commercial production," the Department of Energy said in a statement. "That will provide for six percent of the daily oil demand of the country."

It said the oilfield is expected to produce up to 10 million to 20 million barrels of oil.

Shareholder Nido Petroleum earlier said the offshore Galoc oilfield is expected to produce about 17,500 barrels per day (bpd) of light, high-sulphur crude once it comes on stream. Galoc was to start production in mid-September but this has been pushed back because of bad weather, according to the operator, Galoc Production Company.

Galoc Production Company, comprising of European trader Vitol with a 68.62 percent stake and Otto Energy with the remaining 31.38 percent, operates the field with a 58.29 percent interest.

The remaining 41.71 percent is split between Nido Petroleum, with a 22.28 percent

ABS-CBN Launches Your Song Presents My Only Hope on October 5!

It was the second time na nakita ko ang 1st Episode ng Your Song Presents My Only Hope, the first one was the rough version yung hindi pa gaano edited and the 2nd one was today (October 1) sa Dolphy theater with the rest of the entertainment press.

It's more mature that what we saw in My Girl before dahil ang show ay bubbly talaga and it was directed by directors Eric Salud ( I love Betty La Fea director now) and Jerome Pobongan (yung kasama namin sa Baguio when we shot the My Girl Baguio scene). Now My Only Hope is directed by Jojo Seguin my former director in Wazzup Wazzup that aired on Studio 23.

What about the show of course I don't want to talk spoilers here and bias aside, I never expected that I was still amazed eventhough nakita ko na yung ibang unedited scenes, been in the storycon and religoiusly in our AdProm meeting. Even the multiply site myonlyhope.multiply.com was different from the frolic mygirltv.multiply.com. Most of the characters change like Gerald Anderson who plays the emo Keeno and Niña Jose who plays Keeno's problematic girlfriend. Kim Chiu is partly the same from My Girl but it's more bigger role for her as she plays April, a girl who is burdened from the death of his father. Kasama sa kanila nandoon pa rin sila Enchong Dee (Jhun), Alex Gonzaga (Fifi), Regine Angeles (Yang), David Chua (August), Carlo Guevarra (Arnold) and Xian Lim (Rick).

Your Song Presents My Only Hope airs on October 5, after ASAP'08, with 16 episodes.
